Activities
Eric Gilman, Ph.D., conducts research on the ecological effects and governance of pelagic (open-ocean) fisheries. He provides consultancy research and advisory services to intergovernmental organizations, domestic government agencies, seafood supply chain companies and non-governmental organizations. He is owner and principal of the Pelagic Ecosystems Research Group and Associate Faculty at Hawaii Pacific University. He provides long-term advisory services to The Nature Conservancy, Luen Thai Fishing Venture and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. His research areas include: mechanisms for pelagic ecosystem resistance, resilience and stability; direct and collateral effects of pelagic fisheries; gear technology mitigation of problematic fisheries bycatch; regional governance systems for tuna fisheries; and reduction of ghost fishing efficiency of derelict fishing gear. He assists seafood companies to develop and implement sustainable sourcing practices for tuna products, and coordinates implementation of regional-level activities of fisheries in the Marine Stewardship Council program and in Fishery Improvement Projects. Previous employment included Marine Science Advisor with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Global Marine Programme, Head of Participation of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, Pacific Representative for the National Audubon Society Oceans Program, Special Assistant for the Environment with the Office of the Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Environmental Advisor to the Pohnpei Port Authority of the Federated States of Micronesia. He has a PhD from the University of Tasmania School of Geography and Environmental Studies, Australia; MSc from Oregon State University Department of Oceanography, USA; and BA from Wesleyan University, USA. Eric’s five-year average citation rate is 400/year.
