Dr. Carole Durussel is a Deputy Secretary at the OSPAR Commission.
Prior to joining OSPAR, she was co-leading the STRONG High Seas project (Strengthening Regional Ocean Governance for the High Seas), a project that facilitates the development of comprehensive, cross-sectoral approaches to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) in the Southeast Atlantic and Southeast Pacific. She conducted research to advance and strengthen regional ocean governance, with a particular focus on the legal and institutional framework for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in ABNJ. She also provided scientific, technical, and legal contributions to the UN negotiations on a new legally binding agreement for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in ABNJ.
Dr. Durussel has several years of experience working on issues related to ocean governance, the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in ABNJ, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals. She is an Honorary Fellow at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) in Australia and a member of Team HB5 of the Homeward Bound Initiative. She holds a PhD in international environmental law from the University of Wollongong, Australia, and a masters’ equivalent in marine environmental sciences from the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg, Germany.
