Activities
Specialized in the multidisciplinary approach
involving biology, toxicology, oncobiology, biochemistry, geochemistry, oceanography
and coastal management with the aim to evaluate the impacts of anthropogenic
pressures on marine ecosystems, with the focus on emerging contaminants. My
research interests are currently devoted to the Environmental risks caused by
anticancer pharmaceuticals and their modes of action towards non-target aquatic
organisms and the application of alternative in-vitro methods based on the use of marine and human cell lines,
or isolated subcellular fractions in order to reduce the use of experimental organisms.
In vivo, ex vivo, in vitro techniques
have been applied to evaluate biochemical biomarkers of marine invertebrate
species exposed to environmentally realistic levels of drugs, nanoparticles and
microplastics.
Skills
Training national and international students; transferring knowledge and results of the research group,
either in scientific conferences and events for society awareness; Experience in/commitment to
plan and coordinate experiments and activities in the laboratory; stockroom management for order supplies and inventory of reagents, equipment
and materials; organization and supervision for disposal of chemical wastes; administer timelines and budgets of multiple projects; expertise
in organizing field surveys; maintenance and care of copepods cultures; set up
and maintenance of in vivo and in vitro experiments conducted in short
and long-term period of exposure; wide experience in performing experiments
with amphipods, copepods, mussels, clams, sea-urchin, polychaetes, by using a
range of endpoints and analysis. It includes assessment of mortality,
embryo-toxicity, and fecundity, in addition, to biochemical analysis of neurotoxicity,
biotransformation, oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, DNA damage, cell
viability and cytotoxicity assays.
