I am a zooplankton ecologist with special interest in plankton production. I currently investigate the pelagic trophic web, from primary producers to fish larvae, by means of integrative taxonomy (combining optic and molecular tools), and the effect of eutrophication on the plankton production of the Spanish Mediterranean and Mar Menor coastal lagoon. Since 2010, I participate in the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD, 2008/56/EC), providing advice with respect to biodiversity, trophic webs and eutrophication.

My research is markedly multidisciplinary, including ecophysiology and trophodynamics of planktonic organisms, biological oceanography, active carbon fluxes, population dynamics in relation to global change, and the optimization and application of new biochemical and molecular techniques in marine biology. I developed a new enzymatic index of zooplankton production (AARS method, Yebra & Hernández-León, 2004) that facilitates the study of plankton ecology at oceanographic scale.
