Jon started his professional career in terrestrial
national parks, spending 11 years in places like the Grampians and Kakadu. In
1986, Jon joined the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) in
Townsville. For the next 28 years, Jon participated in many aspects of planning
and managing the GBR, including 16 years as one of the GBRMPA Directors. As a
Director, Jon was variously responsible for biodiversity conservation, park
planning, heritage (particularly World Heritage), Indigenous Partnerships, the
GBR rezoning and commencing the first GBR Outlook Report. Between 2007-2011,
Jon was also one of the three-person Australian delegation to serve on the
World Heritage Committee.
After retiring from GBRMPA in 2014, Jon undertook
a post-career PhD, analysing the reasons behind the success of the GBR
rezoning.
These days Jon is still actively involved in a range of marine
management, climate change and World Heritage matters. His current efforts include
applications of the ‘Climate Vulnerability Index’ (or CVI), a rapid assessment
tool now being used in many heritage areas around the world.
