Activities
Comprehensive hydrophysical, hydrochemical and hydrobiological studies of water masses in seas and oceans, their physical fields (acoustic, optical, electromagnetic, temperature), some parameters (sea wave, ocean currents, vortices, internal waves, ice cover, etc.) energy-mass exchange and the interaction of the ocean and atmosphere, marine ecosystems state;
Studies of geology, geophysics and geochemistry of the Pacific Ocean and its mineral resources.
Development of new methods and creation of technical means to study the ocean and atmosphere, development and application of the remote control methods, creation and analysis of the oceanography data bases.
V. I. Il'ichev Pacific Oceanological Institute is situated in a picturesque suburb of Vladivostok near Chaika railway station not far from the Amur Bay coast of the Sea of Japan. The Institute involves laboratory and administrative buildings of the total area about 18.5 thousand sq. m.
The Institute has two marine experimental stations one of them is situated on Popov Island in Peter The Great Bay, and the other one is situated on the Shul'ts Peninsula in the vicinity of Vityaz' Bay on the shore of the Sea of Japan.
Scientific cruises in the open Ocean are performed by the employees of the Institute on the research vessels of the Far-Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences.
The staff of the POI is about 600 people, 450 of them work at scientific laboratories, including 250 scientific workers.
At the Institute there are 30 scientists with the scientific degree of Doctor of Sciences and 118 Candidates of Sciences.
