Activities
Designing coastal, oceanographic & seismic equipments; Monitors Ocean and seismic observations in Kenya and within the region; Timely produce and disseminate Marine and Tsunami forecasts, advisories and
warnings such as tide prediction, sea-level, ocean temperatures, waves and
storm surges; Monitor Ocean climatology over Western Indian Ocean; Develop tsunamigenic
and ocean models for tsunami/wave forecasting and climate change monitoring.
Establish and monitor the bathymetry and topography near the coastal zone and
inland waters; Coordinates marine/ocean observational networks and manages seismic
and marine data. Carry out operational research in various aspects of Meteorology, Oceanography and related earth
science including monitoring earth and marine seismic activities, modeling
tsunami source generation scenarios, their propagatioin, and inundation along
the coastline, coastal modeling and evaluating Indian Ocean processes, among
other activities. Participate in the JCOMM, ICG/IOTWS and its expert
Teams (SOT, ETMSS etc). Maintain International regulations, standards and best
practices in the field of Tsunami, oceanography and marine meteorology among
others
Skills
Experience with various types of computer software namely;
Ocean Data View (ODV), Integrated Data Viewer (IDV), Java OceanAtlas (JOA), Tidal Analysis
and Prediction of Tides (TAPtides), DHI-MIKE 21 and Estuary Lake and Coastal Ocean Model
(ELCOM) hydrodynamic modeling software’s, Tsunami Modeling software for
Tsunami generation, propagation and coastal inundation, Panoply and HDF view, Generic Mapping Tools (GMT), Winsurf, Surfer, Grapher, ArcGIS 10.2.x, Seiscomp3,
Seis-PC and Mirone software for seismic and related earth data analysis, Climate
Predictability Tool (CPT); SYSTAT, STATA
and INSTAT statistical packages; Matlab, Microsoft Office, Linux (Ubuntu) and Windows operating systems
